Ticks, fleas and how to keep them away this Summer
Protect your pets this season - naturally & effectively.
Summer’s here, and that means longer days, sunnier skies and more outdoor adventures with your furry best friend. However, as the temperature climbs, so does the activity of two unwelcome guests: ticks and fleas on dogs.
When temperatures rise above 4°C, ticks and fleas start to thrive. Due to milder winters in recent years, they’re now active nearly all year long, thriving in environments such as tall grass, wooded areas, and even in your garden. Therefore, it’s more important than ever to be vigilant and proactive in protecting our pets from their irritating bites!
Ticks are notorious for being silent troublemakers. They are blood-sucking pests often found in grass, hedgerows, and forests. Their bites are usually painless and easy to miss, but they can carry diseases such as, Lyme disease, which can impact a pet’s long-term health.
It’s important to carry out daily checks on your pet to remove these unwelcome guests. Areas such as behind the ears, under the collar, between the toes, and around the tail should be carefully examined. If a tick is found, removal of a tick should be done by using a tick remover or tweezers, gripping as close to the skin as possible and pulling straight out without twisting or squeezing. After removal, the site should be cleaned thoroughly, and the pet should be observed for any changes in behaviour or signs of illness in the days that follow. If you are worried about your pet’s health or want to learn more about Lyme prevention for dogs, make sure you contact your local vet for advice.
Fleas on dogs are quick to multiply and hard to spot. They love warm, humid environments, and once they find a host, they don’t waste any time. A single adult flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day, making infestations both common and difficult to manage. If you suspect fleas, use a flea treatment for both your pet and your home. This means washing your pet's bedding, toys, and blankets regularly, and vacuuming carpets, rugs, furniture to remove eggs and larvae that may be hiding in the home, washing your dog with a special flea treatment shampoo and you could even invest in a Seresto Collar! These are some recommended flea treatments for dogs.
Protecting your pet from ticks and fleas doesn’t always require harsh chemicals or complicated routines. With daily awareness, consistent checks, and the use of safe, natural treatments, you can keep your pet comfortable and protected all season long.
